Summit Rock Clubhouse: Luxury in the Layers

Summit Rock sits at the heart of Horseshoe Bay Resort, a private, members-only club built around a Jack Nicklaus Signature course overlooking Lake LBJ, about an hour west of Austin. Murphy Cramer Design rooted the new clubhouse in the region’s German farmhouse heritage, working in Austin stone limestone, hand-troweled plaster, exposed wood beams, and warm metal. This fall, Golf Inc. named it second place in its Clubhouse of the Year competition.

The luxurious interiors layer custom furnishings with antique and aged pieces so the clubhouse feels collected over time. We curated and created the art collection to carry that same intent onto the walls. From our 2D in-house studio and 3D fabrication team, bespoke imagery and curated objects add that layer of luxury.

Curating for luxury

At this level, luxury shows up in the details. We built gallery walls that layer original works with dimensional objects d’art, ephemera, and vintage finds, so each wall rewards a second look. Every piece earns its place through the site: local wildflowers, Hill Country vistas, and regional history. Even the abstract works began as paintings of local landscape views.

Rooted in Hill Country history

German settlers arrived in the Hill Country in the 1840s and built the limestone farmhouses that still define the region. Murphy Cramer drew on that heritage, and so did we, with vintage photography of early homesteads and period ephemera that connect members to the people who worked this land more than a century ago.

Layers within the frame

We treated framing as part of the curation, not an afterthought. In one series, vintage photographs sit in brass photo corners on top of custom-painted backgrounds, so a sepia river scene floats over washes of layered hills. In another, we printed hand-drawn botanical illustrations directly onto the matboards, framing a vintage photograph of a stone farmhouse mid-roofing with local wildflowers. Moulding choices vary across the collection, from burl veneer with gilded rope trim to antique gold and warm walnut, giving each piece its own presence while holding up against stone and plaster.

Made in our studio

Our in-house 2D studio created a number of original works for the clubhouse. A golfing cowboy pulls through his swing while his saddled horse waits by the pin. A hand-drawn and watercolored putting green, red flag set against a stand of trees, brings the course itself indoors.

Where our art fabrication studio comes in

At the bar, a dimensional crest interlocks an S and an R for Summit Rock, wrapped in acanthus scrollwork and crowned with a bee. Our fabrication team carved it in-house and finished it in a single tone, letting the relief carry the detail, much like the hand-worked plaster around it.

All under one roof

This is how we work. As a hybrid art consulting firm with in-house 2D and 3D studios, we move from sourcing a vintage photograph to printing a custom mat to carving a crest without handing the work to another vendor. For Murphy Cramer and Horseshoe Bay Resort, that meant one partner accountable for the art collection from concept through installation.
