THE STORY
BREACHING and DIVING are both life-size juvenile humpback whales, suspended 40’ above the walkway to the Chula Vista convention center at the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Hotel. They are composed of 1600+ translucent acrylic rods at different lengths.
Humpback whales migrate up to 5,000 miles between feeding grounds in Alaska and breeding grounds off the coast of Mexico, passing along the California Coast from December to May. These life-sized calf sculptures, Breaching and Diving, capture brief moments of their incredible migratory journey—breaching, when the whale leaps from the water, and diving, as it plunges beneath the surface.
